Can I Remove Incorrect Information About My Company from ChatGPT?
A wrong answer, an incorrect web page and personal information need different requests. Learn what to report, what evidence to provide and how to check the outcome.
The practical answer
You can report an incorrect ChatGPT answer and, in some circumstances, request correction or removal. That is not a guaranteed way to erase your company from every future response. Start by identifying what needs changing: the generated claim, a cited web page, information about an individual, or something saved in your own account. Each has a different route. Preserve the evidence, use the appropriate process and verify the outcome separately.
ChatGPT says your business has closed, attributes an allegation to the wrong organization, or invents a qualification you have never held. You want the error gone. Before submitting a request, narrow it down to the exact statement and the evidence that contradicts it.
This guide explains published reporting and privacy procedures, with an editorial workflow for preparing a useful request. It is not legal advice about a particular dispute. References and interface instructions were checked on 21 September 2026; consult the linked official pages if an option has moved.
What can you ask to correct or remove from ChatGPT?
“Remove my company from ChatGPT” leaves several questions unanswered. Is the problem a false sentence in one answer, a source that keeps repeating an error, or personal information about a founder? Define the object of the request before choosing the form.
| What you found | Route to consider | What to keep separate |
|---|---|---|
| A false or misleading generated statement | Response feedback; content reporting if a policy or legal issue applies. | Submitting a report is not confirmation of a correction. |
| An incorrect statement on a cited website | The publisher's correction process, alongside any relevant response report. | The web page and the AI answer are different items. |
| Information concerning an identifiable person | Review the personal-data procedures described below. | A business-related statement is not automatically a personal-data case. |
| An unwanted chat or remembered detail in your account | The relevant chat and memory controls. | Your account history is not a record of what every user sees. |
OpenAI's privacy policy says people can request correction or removal of factually inaccurate information about themselves through its privacy portal or dsar@openai.com. It considers requests in light of applicable law and model capabilities. That is a qualified request process, not a promise of a particular result. Source: OpenAI Privacy Policy, Your rights.
Company information and personal data are not interchangeable
For the EU framework, GDPR Recital 14 distinguishes the protection of natural persons from information concerning legal persons, including a company's own name and contact details. Article 4 defines personal data by reference to an identified or identifiable natural person. A statement about a director may therefore need a different analysis from a statement about the company's product. Source: GDPR, Recital 14 and Article 4.
Do not assume that every business complaint qualifies for a privacy removal, or that a business context rules out an individual's privacy concern. Identify whose information is involved. If the distinction or a potential legal claim matters to your response, have a qualified adviser assess it under the relevant law.
Save the incorrect answer and the evidence for a correction
Keep the complete exchange before editing the prompt or deleting anything. The sentence around an allegation may show whether ChatGPT is asserting it as fact, quoting a complaint, or describing someone impersonating the business. Those are materially different observations.
- Exact claim: copy the disputed sentence and enough surrounding text to preserve its meaning.
- Original question: include the prompt and earlier messages that supplied company details.
- Conditions: record the date, product, displayed model or mode, and relevant search or personalization settings.
- Identity: identify the intended company by its public domain, location and other useful distinguishing details.
- Evidence: save source URLs, the relevant passages and any dates that affect the claim.
- Requested outcome: state the correction or review you are actually seeking.
In ChatGPT on the web, OpenAI says search results and citations appear when web search is used. Check those indicators; do not assume the response consulted the current internet. Source: ChatGPT, Web search.
Open each citation. Does it contain the asserted fact, support only part of it, or concern another business? If there is no inspectable source, record the claim as unsupported by the material you have reviewed. That is more precise than claiming you have proved where the model learned it.
For a wrong-company attribution, first follow our guide to checking whether AI has confused your business with a namesake. For an allegation involving fraud, use the separate process for investigating an AI scam claim before treating the allegation as either established or false.
Make the evidence specific enough to review
A homepage link alone may not address the error. If the disputed fact is a closure, identify the evidence of current operation. If the problem is a misquoted record, provide the relevant passage and explain the mismatch. If the facts are disputed, say what remains unresolved instead of presenting your preferred account as settled.
Keep an original private record and a separate submission copy. Include what the official process requires, while avoiding unrelated customer details, employee records or confidential documents. Do not publish a sensitive conversation merely to create a convenient link for a report.
How to report incorrect company information in ChatGPT
For an ordinary factual error, describe the error in feedback
Use the response-feedback control available beneath the message and explain the specific mismatch. Keep the request factual: what the answer said, what the evidence establishes and which wording needs review. Do not select a legal or safety category simply because you dislike the answer.
For a potential policy or legal violation, use the reporting route
OpenAI's reporting instructions describe an in-product path: select the thumbs-down control, choose Select an issue, then Safety or Legal concern and follow the prompts. The same help page links to the web reporting form. Use the current official instructions if your interface differs. Source: OpenAI, Reporting Content.
The OpenAI content-reporting form covers potential policy violations and illegal content. It asks for the affected product, the reported content and available URLs, with an optional screenshot. If you allege illegality, it asks for an explanation and, where possible, the relevant law. Describe only grounds you can substantiate; the form is not an automatic takedown instruction.
Save your submission and any acknowledgment or reference number. If the reply requests clarification, answer the specific point with the relevant evidence. An acknowledgment establishes that a report was received; it does not establish that OpenAI accepted the claim or changed future answers.
Where a serious allegation is causing harm, a qualified legal adviser can help assess the appropriate legal basis and response. A chatbot's own assertion that content is “defamatory” is not a legal assessment of your case.
When can you request removal of personal information?
OpenAI accepts personal-data removal requests from individuals without an account and from legally authorized representatives. It weighs privacy against other interests; approval is not automatic. Source: OpenAI, personal-data removal guidance.
- Open the official Privacy Portal.
- Choose Make a Privacy Request, then the option to remove personal data from ChatGPT responses.
- Identify the information, provide specific examples and explain the grounds for the request.
- Follow the official identity-verification instructions and provide authority to act where required.
For a correction request concerning inaccurate information about you, OpenAI's privacy policy also gives the portal and the contact address in the first section. Follow the version of the policy applicable to your location. Source: OpenAI Privacy Policy.
A privacy request concerning a founder and a response report concerning the company may involve different information. Keep their scope clear instead of claiming that the entire business record is one person's data.
What if ChatGPT is repeating an incorrect website?
Separate a source error from a summary error. If the cited page is accurate but the answer misreads it, your report should show the discrepancy. If the page itself is wrong, prepare a request to its publisher as a separate action.
Correct pages you control
Make the relevant fact clear on the page a reader would reasonably use to verify it. Include an effective date when timing matters. Check that a revised contact page does not contradict an old service page, downloadable brochure or public profile you still control.
Do not rewrite an accurate historical event as though it never occurred. Explain the current position and the timeline. Our guide to correcting outdated company information in AI answers covers that distinction in more detail.
Ask other publishers to review the specific statement
Use the site's published correction or contact process. Supply the page URL, quote the disputed passage, explain the problem and propose wording supported by evidence. A request to fix the wrong company identity is more precise than a demand to delete every unfavorable mention.
Track which publisher received which request and what changed. If the original passage remains disputed, keep that status in your record. A customer complaint, a substantiated criticism and a demonstrably false attribution should not be treated as interchangeable.
OpenAI explicitly says its personal-data removal process does not remove material from external websites or search engines. Those platforms require separate action. Source: OpenAI, removal scope.
Likewise, a publisher correcting a page is evidence of a source correction. It does not establish that every later ChatGPT response has changed. Keep the source check and the answer check separate.
A template for reporting an incorrect company statement
Use this editorial template to organize the factual part of a submission. Adapt it to the recipient's process, complete any mandatory fields and remove sections that do not apply. It is not an OpenAI form or a legal notice.
Factual review request
Subject: Request to review an inaccurate statement about [company] Product or page: [ChatGPT mode, response reference, or source URL] Observed on: [date and time] Original question: [exact prompt, if relevant] Statement to review: "[exact sentence]" Intended company: [public name, domain and location] Specific error: [what is incorrect or misleading] Supporting evidence: [URL, relevant passage and date] Requested correction or review: [precise, supported outcome] Unresolved points: [any material uncertainty] My role: [relationship to the company or person concerned] Please confirm receipt and advise whether more evidence is needed.
Keep each disputed fact easy to match to its supporting evidence. For several errors, use separate entries rather than burying them in a long account of the company's reputation. Do not invent a legal ground to make a routine correction request appear more urgent.
Correcting the current conversation is a separate exercise
You can supply verified information and ask ChatGPT to revise the immediate answer. Review the revision for new unsupported claims. Treat it as an answer produced with added evidence, not proof of a permanent change for other users.
Check the disputed sentence
You stated: "[exact claim]" about [company name and domain]. Evidence to review: [public URL and relevant passage]. Please compare the claim with this evidence. If you can access the source, check its wording and date. If you cannot, say that your review relies on the text I supplied. Identify what is supported, contradicted or still unknown. Revise only the claims the evidence justifies changing. Do not claim that this exchange changes answers for other users.
Will deleting chats, changing memory or blocking bots remove the error?
Deleting a conversation manages that conversation
OpenAI says a deleted chat disappears from your account view immediately and is scheduled for deletion from its systems within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions. Archiving does not delete it. That retention schedule is not a deadline for correcting a company claim in future outputs. Source: OpenAI, Deleting and archiving chats.
Preserve the evidence you need before deleting the original. Removing your copy of the conversation should not be recorded as resolution of the factual dispute.
Memory settings affect personalization
OpenAI distinguishes remembered information from its sources. Asking ChatGPT not to mention something changes personalization without deleting the underlying source; deleting a chat alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory. Follow the relevant memory controls if the issue is information remembered in your account. Source: OpenAI, Memory in ChatGPT.
A preference in your account is not evidence that a different user's answer changed. Record it as an account-setting change.
Training preferences concern use of your conversations
The Improve the model for everyone control lets you opt out of using new conversations for model training. OpenAI documents it as a data-use setting. It is not described as a tool for deleting a public company fact from model outputs. Source: OpenAI, Data Controls FAQ.
Crawler rules concern your website's use
OpenAI documents independent controls for GPTBot, which crawls material that may be used for training, and OAI-SearchBot, which serves search. It also distinguishes user-triggered visits through ChatGPT-User. These are different mechanisms. Source: OpenAI crawler documentation.
Do not treat a robots.txt edit as proof that a past claim has been erased. Blocking access to your own site does not correct a statement on someone else's site. Review the intended effect with your site maintainer before changing access to pages that contain accurate evidence.
How do you know whether the incorrect information was removed?
Record the outcome at the level you can verify. A request receipt, a publisher's edit, a decision from OpenAI and a changed response are different pieces of evidence. Use a simple case log with the original claim, action, date, reference and next review step.
- Submitted: you sent a request through the relevant route.
- Reviewed: you received a decision or a request for additional evidence.
- Source corrected: you inspected the public page and confirmed the change.
- Answer changed: a documented follow-up no longer repeated the disputed claim.
For a follow-up, reuse the original question in a separate conversation and record the product, date, search activity and relevant context. Do not silently add the correct answer to the test prompt. If you do provide corrective evidence, label that as a separate test.
Keep contrary results and failures too. One clean answer does not prove the claim can never recur. Conversely, if you saved an earlier response, reading that saved text again is not a fresh generation. Keep the original evidence and new observations clearly dated.
The documentation cited here does not provide a universal turnaround for correcting company information. If a service provider promises guaranteed deletion everywhere by a fixed date, ask what exact content, platform action and verifiable outcome that promise covers.
An absence from a recommendation list is another issue entirely. If your concern is visibility rather than a false statement, see why AI recommends competitors instead of your company.
Can ReputationScan remove information from ChatGPT?
No. ReputationScan does not submit removal requests, modify AI models or test ChatGPT. It asks its tested Claude and Gemini models about a company by name, with the country when supplied. Those queries have no web tools and do not receive the company's website; website and public identity signals are collected separately.
The report can help you inspect those models' descriptions and compare identity signals. Read the answers and original scan time: repeat requests may return a cached report, and automated assessments can be wrong. See how the scan works and what the checks cover.
Review the wider picture
What do the tested models say about your company?
Inspect their descriptions and the available evidence as a separate check.
Run a free scanReputationScan refers interested businesses to SecondSideMedia, a partner that publishes corrective public records, and may earn a commission from resulting business. Neither a scan nor a new public record guarantees removal from ChatGPT.
Common questions about removing company information from ChatGPT
Can I edit a company profile inside ChatGPT?
The official procedures reviewed here do not describe a business-owner dashboard for editing a company profile that controls everyone's answers. Report the particular error and address the relevant evidence or source.
Does ChatGPT agreeing with my correction mean the problem is fixed?
It shows what happened in that exchange with the context you supplied. Keep it separate from a new answer to the original question and from a formal response to your request.
Can I request removal without a ChatGPT account?
An account is not required for the personal-data process. That does not make a company complaint eligible; check whose information is involved.
Can I remove a negative answer just because it hurts the business?
An unfavorable answer alone does not identify a factual error or establish grounds for removal. Specify the statement, the evidence and the applicable concern. Distinguish legitimate criticism from incorrect attribution or unsupported claims.
What if ChatGPT says it does not know my company?
That is an omission rather than a specific false fact to remove. Our guide to checking why ChatGPT does not recognize a company explains how to investigate it.
