ChatGPT Has Outdated Information About My Company: What Can I Do?

An old address, a former executive or a discontinued service: trace the claim, establish the timeline and correct the information you can verify.

By ReputationScanPublished 14 min read · estimated

The practical answer

If ChatGPT has outdated information about your company, save the exact claim and establish what changed, when it changed and which public evidence supports the current fact. Check whether the answer used web search, correct outdated information on pages you control, and request specific updates from other publishers where necessary. Then retest the original question separately from a conversation in which you supply the correction. A corrected page and a corrected AI answer are different outcomes.

ChatGPT names your former director, sends customers to an office you have left or describes a service you no longer offer. It appears to recognize the business, but the description belongs to an earlier version of it.

The next step is to investigate the particular fact. This guide provides an editorial workflow for checking stale company information and deciding where to act. The linked provider documentation supports the platform-specific points; it cannot establish why your particular response was wrong.

01 / Check the timeline

Confirm that the information is outdated, rather than about another company

An old fact is something that was accurate for this business at an earlier time. Before calling a response outdated, verify that the information actually belonged to your company and that the question called for a current answer.

For example, a sentence naming a former director can be accurate in a dated announcement. The problem arises if that sentence is presented as a description of current leadership. A response about the business's history should be assessed against the period being discussed.

Identify the fact, its meaning and its effective date

An old address is described as currentYour current contact page and a dated relocation announcement, if availableA registered address, an operating office and a customer-facing location may serve different purposes.
A former executive is named as the current leaderThe current leadership page and a dated departure or appointment announcementAn announcement date is not necessarily the date the role changed.
A discontinued service is presented as availableThe current service page and any withdrawal or replacement noticeA legacy support arrangement may differ from an offer available to new customers.
A previous company name is usedA public explanation of the name change and the present company profileA trading name, product name and legal entity name are not automatically interchangeable.

These are review scenarios, not findings about any actual business. Use the documents that apply to your own circumstances. If sources conflict, record the conflict rather than silently selecting the version you prefer.

If the domain, location and activity belong to a namesake, follow our guide to AI confusing your company with another company. If there is no useful identification at all, start with why ChatGPT does not know your company. Those problems need different evidence.

02 / Find the evidence

Check whether the old fact came with a current source

Save the prompt and full answer before asking for a correction. Include the date, displayed model label, cited links and any company information already present in the conversation. A screenshot is useful, but also retain the text and URLs so another person can inspect them.

If the answer used web search

OpenAI's ChatGPT documentation says search results and citations appear when web search is used on the web, and that workspace settings can limit availability. Inspect the conversation's search activity rather than relying only on the assistant's claim that it checked. Source: ChatGPT, Web search.

Open each link associated with the disputed detail. Does the page still state the old fact? Is it a historical announcement with a visible date? Does it now say something different? Or does it fail to support the claim at all?

A citation is a lead to investigate, not proof that the surrounding sentence is accurate. If today's page differs from the saved answer, record both versions and the time you checked. That discrepancy alone does not reveal what the system retrieved when it generated the answer.

If you cannot verify that search was used

Record the retrieval condition as unverified. An answer that supplies no inspectable evidence cannot tell you which particular page, training example or internal process produced an old detail.

OpenAI's developer guidance identifies outdated knowledge as one reason a model may need additional context. It distinguishes providing relevant context from optimizing model behavior. That supports testing with current evidence; it does not identify the cause of your response or provide a website owner's timetable for a model update. Source: OpenAI, Optimizing LLM Accuracy.

Build a correction record for one claim at a time

  • Observed claim: the exact sentence, with the original prompt and response date.
  • Current fact: the proposed correction and the date it became effective.
  • Supporting evidence: public URLs and the passages that establish the change.
  • Source status: still outdated, updated, explicitly historical, unavailable or not identified.
  • Action and outcome: who was contacted, what changed and when you verified it.

Do not label an old page as the cause simply because you found it. If it was cited, say it was cited. If you discovered it separately, label it as a possible relevant source.

03 / Correct what you control

Update your website with a clear, dated account of the change

Our recommended starting point is the page a customer would use to verify the disputed detail. Update the contact page for a move, the leadership page for a role change or the relevant service page for a discontinued offer. Check other places on your site where the same fact appears, including downloadable material.

Separate present facts from historical records

Write a straightforward statement of what is true now. Where the transition matters, explain the relationship between the old and new information. A reusable editorial pattern is: “From [effective date], [current fact]. Before that date, [previous fact].” Fill it only with facts you can substantiate.

Keep the effective date distinct from the date you edited the page. If the business moved earlier but you updated the site today, today's edit does not become the date of the move.

A historical announcement does not necessarily need rewriting. Where appropriate, retain its original date and add a clearly labeled update or a link to the current company page. The objective is to avoid presenting historical information as current while preserving a truthful record.

Check the structured data as well as the visible page

If your site publishes structured data containing the changed detail, review it with your maintainer. Google's guidelines require marked-up content to represent the page accurately and advise keeping it current. Updating visible text while leaving contradictory markup would undermine that consistency. These are Google structured-data requirements, not a promise that ChatGPT will use your markup. Use truthful sitemap dates and request a recrawl where appropriate

If your sitemap includes lastmod, it should describe the last significant page update. Google says it uses this value when it is consistently and verifiably accurate. Do not refresh every page's date merely because you rebuilt the website. Source: Google, Build and submit a sitemap.

For a URL you manage, an authorized Search Console user can request indexing after a change. Google warns that requesting a crawl does not guarantee inclusion in results, immediately or at all; repeating the request does not make crawling faster. This concerns Google Search, not the timing of a ChatGPT correction. Source: Google, Ask Google to recrawl your URLs.

04 / Address other sources

Request corrections to outdated profiles and third-party pages

Prioritize pages that the answer cited and profiles customers actually use. For a page controlled by another publisher, send the exact claim and evidence of the current fact. An accepted request is useful, but verify the published page before marking the issue resolved.

If an older claim concerns alleged fraud, also check the evidence behind the AI scam claim. Review who was involved and what the source actually established before deciding whether the answer needs a correction.

Google Business Profile: edit the existing information

If you manage an applicable Business Profile, Google allows edits to details such as address, hours and contact information through the linked account. Follow its instructions for your profile and the particular change. Source: Google, Edit your Business Profile.

Google reviews edits, and their status can be accepted, pending or not approved. Saving an edit is not the same as seeing it published. Check the status and what customers can actually see. Source: Google, What happens to Business Profile edits.

Google knowledge panels: support a specific correction

Google's knowledge-panel guidance asks for specific feedback backed by publicly accessible URLs. For a description drawn from another source, it directs people to contact that source for a correction. A panel-feedback submission is not an editor for ChatGPT responses. Source: Google, Submit feedback on content about you.

Directories and publications: send a focused request

Use the publisher's correction or profile-management process. For an accurate historical article, consider requesting a dated update or a link to the current information rather than asking the publisher to erase the history. Adapt the template below to the page and the evidence you can provide.

Correction request template

Subject: Update request for [company name] on [page title]

Your page [URL] currently states: "[exact sentence]".
The current position is [current fact], effective from [date].
Public supporting evidence: [URL and relevant passage].

Please review this detail and, if appropriate, update the current
description or add a dated note linking to the new information.
Please let us know when the change is published.

If a Google result still displays information removed from a page

Google's Refresh Outdated Content tool is intended for qualifying changes to pages you do not own, such as removed pages or significantly changed content. It is not the route for disputing information that remains on the live page. The tool changes Google's search result, not the underlying website. Review its eligibility instructions before submitting a request. Source: Google, Refresh Outdated Content tool.

Do not describe a refreshed Google result as an update to ChatGPT. Verify the response in the product where the original problem occurred.

05 / Check a corrected answer

Give ChatGPT current evidence for the immediate question

After saving the original response, you can provide the correct fact and its evidence to obtain a more useful answer in that conversation. If search is available, ask for a check of current pages. If it cannot access a page, ask it to state that limitation rather than treating the URL itself as verified evidence.

Evidence-based correction prompt

You described [company name] as follows:
"[exact outdated claim]".

Please check the current position as of [date].
The change took effect on [effective date].
Relevant public evidence: [URL and supporting passage].

If web search is available, open the sources and check what they say.
Separate the historical fact from the current fact.
Cite the evidence for the current statement.
If you cannot access or verify it, say so.
Do not infer unrelated changes to the company.

Read the resulting answer closely. Did it correct only the supported detail, or did it invent a new office, title or service along the way? Keep the current fact narrowly defined and check each additional claim before using the text publicly.

If you paste an excerpt because a page cannot be retrieved, label the result as based on supplied text. Acknowledging your correction is not independent verification that the source says what you claim.

You can also use a response-feedback option where available, attaching the specific disputed claim and public evidence. Treat the submission as a report, not confirmation of a lasting correction. A successful exchange does not demonstrate a change for other users or a later conversation.

If you need to escalate beyond the current conversation, review how to report or request removal of incorrect information from ChatGPT. A response report, a personal-data request and a publisher correction have different scopes; choose the route that matches the information involved.

06 / Verify the outcome

Retest without confusing a website update with a model update

Return to your original question in a separate conversation. Record the date, displayed model label, search activity and any supplied context. Note personalization or connected information where relevant; a fresh conversation alone is not proof of an isolated experiment.

Keep these outcomes separate in your correction record:

  • Source corrected: the public page now contains the intended update.
  • Search result refreshed: the result you inspected no longer displays the old detail.
  • Answer corrected with evidence supplied: the assistant used the information you provided.
  • Original question answered correctly: a comparable new check returned the current fact without you supplying the correction.

There is no fixed recognition deadline established by the documentation cited here. A publisher's review, a search engine's recrawl and an assistant's next answer are separate events. Report the event you actually observed instead of assigning a universal waiting period.

If a test truly has no retrieval and you do not supply the revised text, it cannot fetch your website edit during that test. A useful answer after enabling search measures a different condition. Neither result, by itself, reveals whether a model's underlying knowledge has been updated.

If the outdated fact also affects a supplier shortlist, review the evidence behind AI competitor recommendations. Correcting a fact and observing a recommendation are separate outcomes; record each one on its own terms.

This checklist stays in this page only. Its selections are not submitted or saved.

Keep unsuccessful checks too. A favorable response is useful evidence, but selecting it while hiding contradictory responses would overstate what the review established.

07 / Compare other models

Where ReputationScan fits in an outdated-information review

ReputationScan currently tests Claude and Gemini models, not ChatGPT. Investigate the ChatGPT answer directly using the steps above. A result from another provider does not establish that ChatGPT's response changed.

The scanner asks about the company by name, with the country when supplied. Its model queries have no web tools and do not receive the company's website. Website information and public identity signals are collected separately for the report. Read how the scan works for the test conditions.

Read the actual responses and the scan time when reviewing a report. A repeated request can return a cached report, so opening a result again is not necessarily a new model query. Use the explanation of the scan checks alongside the evidence, rather than treating a label as a complete history of the business.

Questions / Practical limits

Common questions about outdated company information in ChatGPT

Why does ChatGPT show my old address after I changed my website?

Compare the exact address and its role, then inspect the response's sources and search activity. The website change alone does not establish that this answer retrieved the new page. Without that evidence, you cannot identify the cause from the old address alone.

Will correcting ChatGPT once fix the answer for everyone?

A corrected reply shows what happened in that exchange. It is not evidence that other users will receive the same answer. Keep your original test separate from the conversation containing the correction.

Should I delete old announcements about my company?

Not automatically. If a page accurately records a past event, consider retaining its date and adding a clearly labeled update or link to the current information where useful. Do not rewrite a historical fact merely to make the archive look current.

Can Google's outdated-content tool fix ChatGPT?

The tool addresses qualifying Google Search results, not ChatGPT responses. It also does not rewrite the source page. Use the documented eligibility rules, then check any ChatGPT issue separately.

Does a newer page always override an older source?

A later date alone does not establish that a claim is accurate or supersedes a historical record. Check the fact's effective date, the entity involved and what the evidence actually supports. Do not assume a date label decides which information an assistant will use.

How do I show that the issue is fixed?

State the limited result you verified: a page corrected, a profile updated or a comparable response containing the current fact. Keep the dated evidence. Avoid claiming a permanent correction across all AI products from one successful answer.
